The Counselling Services Thunder Bay Needs

For 20 years, Dr. Paul Johnston has offered the counselling services Thunder Bay calls on when struggling with issues such as stress, anxiety and depression. We tailor our psychotherapy approaches to your situation, offering treatments such as:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – Among today’s most popular forms of psychotherapy, CBT can be very successful in the treatment of anxiety and depression, often preventing the need for medication. CBT identifies and seeks to alter behaviours that stem from unhelpful thought patterns. In this way, the patient learns new coping mechanisms.
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) – In 2 therapy sessions per week, DBT involves both an individual session and a group therapy session through which the patient is coached to change unhealthy behaviours. The patient learns to accept current problems and to work toward bettering the situation through interpersonal skills, acceptance of reality, mindfulness and regulation of emotion.
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) – This form of therapy is effective in treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It seeks to stop the patient from “reliving” traumatic events, so they can remember the incident without feeling the intense pain or upset they associate with it. Because EMDR mirrors what happens during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, it helps a patient review the traumatic event in a less disturbing manner.
  • Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) – We use CAT to determine why the patient feels or thinks the way s/he does, based on past events in the patient’s life. We seek to find better ways to help the patient cope with his or her issues in this way. Through cognitive therapy techniques, we seek to help you develop tools to deal with the issue(s) in a more healthful way.
